What is mandelic acid?
Mandelic acid is an aromatic extract derived from bitter almonds. It is a second-generation alphahydroxy acid (AHA), offering all the exfoliating power yet with a reduced risk of sensitivity. Although mandelic acid has a higher pKa (3.41) than that of glycolic acid, due to its smaller molecular size, it is the gentlest out of the all the AHAs. Mandelic acid is a proven multitasker against hyperpigmentation, discolouration, acne, and the visible signs of ageing. It accelerates skin cell exfoliation and renewal to reveal a fresher, smoother and more even-toned complexion.
Benefits of mandelic acid
1. Brightens complexion
Mandelic acid works to break up all kinds of hyperpigmentation, including sunspots, freckles, age spots, acne scars, and melasma. In clinical studies, mandelic acid was shown to reduce melasma by up to 50 percent.
2. Smooths skin and softens fine lines
Mandelic acid helps skin to shed dead cells and encourages the growth of new cells, which helps to minimise the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. Exfoliation also refines the pores for a smoother skin texture. By stimulating collagen production, it helps skin to retain its elasticity, tensility and plumpness.
3. Calms acne and inflammation
Mandelic acid has antibacterial properties and helps to balance out excess sebum production. It can be integrated into an anti-acne regimen to target comedones. It exfoliates pores to keep them clear of surface oils and impurities that may cause congestion and breakouts. Its anti-inflammatory properties help reduce the appearance of inflammatory acne as well as rosacea and redness.
Is mandelic acid suitable for my skin type?
Mandelic acid is gentle enough to use on all skin types, including sensitive skin. It does not cause hyperpigmentation when used on dark skin.
Can mandelic acid be used alongside other products?
Mandelic acid works well in combination with other products. You can use it alongside other key actives such as salicylic acid and with hydrators such as hyaluronic acid.
How often should I apply mandelic acid?
You will see the best results if you regularly apply a product containing mandelic acid to freshly cleansed skin and wait until it’s fully absorbed before applying moisturiser. Mandelic acid is gentle enough to use twice a day.
