Are you correctly applying your sun protection? If not, it may not be doing you as much good as you think.
UV exposure causes 90 percent of premature ageing by activating enzymes that break down elastin and collagen. You know that in order to protect your skin from UV-induced photoageing, you need to use a product containing SPF every morning, rain or shine, and even when you’re planning to stay indoors. But do you know whether you’re using a product with sufficient SPF and how to apply it correctly? Here’s some advice straight from the dermatologist’s office.
FIND THE RIGHT PRODUCT: Dermatologists recommend using a product with a sun protection factor of at least 30, as this blocks 97 percent of UVB rays. Begin by finding a sun protection product that’s formulated for your skin type and suitable for daily wear. As you’ll need to apply it liberally and wear it every day, you’ll want to choose one that’s specifically designed for use on the face in order to minimise the risk of irritation and breakouts, especially if you have sensitive or acne-prone skin. Unless you love your SPF product, you’ll be tempted to skip it, and it won’t do you any good just sitting in your bathroom cabinet.
Facetheory’s Amil-C Whip M5 SPF 30 is a whipped mousse moisturiser that’s invisible on all skin tones and suitable for all skin types. It has a rich, silky texture that melts into your skin for a traceless finish and protects against the full spectrum of UV rays without causing sensitivity. Formulated with 5% niacinamide and dual-action vitamin C to balance skin tone, reduce redness and minimise pores while soothing and hydrating, it’s available either unscented or lightly scented with bergamot. And if you’re looking for a devoted sunscreen, Facetheory’s brand-new Sunfragma ZnO SPF50 is a creamy balm that combines non-nano mineral zinc oxide and best-in-class chemical filters to shield skin from UVA and UVB rays without leaving any streaks or chalkiness.
LAYER UP: If you’re confused about the order in which to apply your serums and other skincare products to maximise their potential, here’s an easy way to figure it out. For optimal absorption and protection, always apply your serums in order of weight, starting with the lightest and working your way up to the heaviest. A moisturiser with SPF, such as Amil-C Whip M5 SPF30, can go on top of all your serums (and facial oil, if using). If you’re opting for a devoted sunscreen in addition to moisturiser, you’ll want to apply the moisturiser first and then layer the sunscreen on top. Sunfragma ZnO SPF50 is suitable for use on your face and body, and it’s formulated without alcohol, so it won’t sting or dehydrate your skin. Make sure you cover all areas, including your ears.
APPLY GENEROUSLY: Apply at least one tablespoon of sunscreen to the exposed areas of your face, neck and décolleté. If using an aerosol sunscreen, keep spraying until an even sheen appears on your skin, then gently rub it in. Apply your sunscreen while looking in a mirror so you can see what you are doing and to allow adequate time for it to take effect before you go outside. Reapply it at least every two hours, and more often if you perspire heavily or go swimming.
ALLOW TO SET BEFORE APPLYING MAKE-UP: After applying sun protection, wait for at least 10 minutes before applying make-up. This allows your SPF moisturiser or sunscreen to sink into the skin, so that you can achieve a smooth finish with your foundation. Amil-C Whip M5 SPF 30 absorbs quickly and completely into your skin, so it’s suitable as a base for make-up. If you need to reapply it over the course of the day, use the palms of your hands to press it into your skin and then reapply foundation, if needed.
PROTECT YOUR SKIN, RAIN OR SHINE: It’s essential to wear sun protection on any exposed body part, regardless of the weather or climate. UV rays can penetrate clouds and come in through the windows, so you need to protect your skin even on overcast days and when staying indoors.
COVER ALL AREAS: Apply your SPF moisturiser or sunscreen beginning at the centre of your face and smoothing it outwards, making sure to cover all the exposed areas of your face. Don’t forget to apply it to your hairline, hair parting, neck, ears and behind your ears, as these are commonly missed areas. It is best to wear additional sun protection such as a hat and to avoid direct sun exposure between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m., when the sun is highest in the sky.
